Nowadays the press is declining in importance as new media, which can communicate news more quickly and conveniently, takes its place. This was not always the case; the press was once the only form of media that existed. It started as a way of communication for more people to learn the events that took part in their country and not only their region. After the industrial revolution, urbanization and the income increase the press changed. Companies began to increase profits and product awareness through advertising. Numerous ownerships of newspapers had developed as early as the 18th century. As the years went by the press industry was growing bigger and bigger as more and more people read newspapers. Today we look back and face the question whether the press was a medium for advertising in the 20th century, whereas the press was ‘free’ in the 19th century.
